NIRA: Ugandans will present their old national IDs before getting new ones during mass registration.

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced that Ugandans who already have old national IDs will be required to present them before getting new ones during the mass registration exercise that is set to begin soon. This is to ensure that the data of the citizens is updated and verified, and to avoid duplication of IDs. The new IDs will have enhanced security features and biometric information, and will be linked to other national databases such as immigration, health, education, and tax.

NIRA has urged all eligible Ugandans to take advantage of this opportunity and register for their national IDs, which are essential for accessing various services and exercising their rights as citizens. NIRA has also advised the public to visit its website or call its toll-free number for more information on the registration process and the requirements.

NIRA spokesperson said that the mass registration exercise is part of the government's efforts to improve service delivery and security in the country. He urged all Ugandans to cooperate and participate in the exercise, saying that having a national ID is a constitutional right and a civic duty.

He also warned that those who fail to register or update their information will face legal consequences, such as being denied access to public services, voting rights, and travel documents. He said that NIRA has deployed enough staff and equipment to handle the expected turnout of applicants.
