Unix Systems Officer job at Housing Finance Bank
Housing Finance Bank
Accountable for planning, coordinating and direct management of the Bank’s IT Hardware Infrastructure so as to support the Bank’s operational and customer service strategic objectives.
Unix System Administration: Manage Unix-based operating systems (e.g., Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris) including installation, configuration, patch management, and troubleshooting.
Server Deployment and Maintenance: Deploy new Unix servers as needed, ensuring they are configured properly for the organization's requirements. Perform routine maintenance tasks such as software updates, system backups, and monitoring system performance.
User Account Management: Create, modify, and delete user accounts on Unix systems. Manage user permissions and access controls to ensure security and compliance with organizational policies.
Security Hardening: Implement security best practices to secure Unix systems against unauthorized access, malware, and other security threats. This may include configuring firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and implementing encryption protocols.
Scripting and Automation: Develop and maintain scripts to automate routine system administration tasks, streamline processes, and improve operational efficiency.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution: Investigate and resolve issues related to Unix systems, including performance problems, software errors, and hardware failures. Diagnose root causes of problems and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Capacity Planning: Monitor system resource usage and forecast future capacity requirements. Recommend upgrades or optimizations to ensure Unix systems can support current and future workloads.
Disaster Recovery Planning: Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and procedures for Unix systems. Implement backup and recovery solutions to minimize data loss and downtime in the event of system failures or disasters.
Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Maintain documentation for Unix system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides. Share knowledge with team members and stakeholders to promote best practices and facilitate collaboration.

Education: A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field is typically required. Relevant certifications such as Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) may be preferred.
Experience: Typically, 3+ years of experience in Unix system administration or a related role is required. Candidates should have hands-on experience with Unix/Linux operating systems, command-line interface, and system administration tasks.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in Unix/Linux system administration, including installation, configuration, package management, and troubleshooting. Familiarity with shell scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Perl) and system monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix) is also important.
Security Knowledge: Understanding of Unix security principles and best practices, including user authentication, access controls, encryption, and security hardening techniques.
Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for diagnosing and resolving issues with Unix systems, as well as for implementing proactive measures to prevent problems from occurring.
Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are important for collaborating with team members, interacting with stakeholders, and documenting system configurations and procedures.
Attention to Detail: Unix Systems Officers must have a keen attention to detail to accurately configure and maintain Unix systems, as well as to identify and address potential security vulnerabilities or performance bottlenecks.
