Job Description
As a Senior Web Engineer on a freelance/contract basis, you will collaborate with a world-class team to deliver enterprise-level WordPress solutions. You will be responsible for building and maintaining plugins and themes, participating in code reviews, and contributing to backend strategy and architecture. This role requires excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of modern WordPress and web development practices.
You’ll be working with an impressive client list across a variety of impactful and high-profile projects. You’ll also enjoy a flexible schedule and the ability to work from wherever you choose. This is a great opportunity for someone who values autonomy, innovation, and continuous learning.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Develop custom WordPress plugins and themes using PHP and Gutenberg blocks with React.js
Lead and shape backend technical strategy on large-scale projects
Provide in-depth code reviews and offer technical mentorship
Troubleshoot and resolve complex caching and performance issues
Collaborate with clients and internal teams to translate business needs into technical solutions
Contribute to advancing 10up's engineering practices and standards
Maintain high-quality, scalable, and reusable code

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Proven expertise in WordPress engineering, particularly backend development
Proficient in PHP, React.js, and Gutenberg block development
Strong Git workflow experience and understanding of version control
Ability to debug and resolve performance and caching issues
Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts
Comfort working directly with clients and cross-functional teams
Portfolio of past work (GitHub or similar platform preferred)
Self-driven and effective in a fully remote, distributed environment
