hese duties and requirements outline the essential responsibilities and qualifications expected of Senior Theatre Assistants in supporting surgical procedures and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care within surgical departments.

  • Preparation: Prepare surgical rooms or theaters before procedures, ensuring that they are clean, properly equipped, and set up according to the surgeon's requirements.

  • Instrumentation: Assist in arranging and sterilizing surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for procedures, ensuring their availability and proper functioning.

  • Patient Preparation: Assist with patient positioning, draping, and prepping in collaboration with surgical team members, maintaining sterile techniques to minimize the risk of infection.

  • Assistance During Surgery: Provide support to surgeons and surgical team members during procedures by passing instruments, sutures, and other supplies, as well as operating equipment such as suction devices and retractors.

  • Safety and Sterility: Maintain strict adherence to infection control protocols and safety standards in the operating room, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.

  • Communication: Communicate effectively with surgical team members, including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals, to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient workflow.


  • Post-operative Care: Assist with wound closure, dressing application, and transferring patients to post-anesthesia care units (PACU) or recovery areas after surgery, providing support as needed.

  • Inventory Management: Monitor and replenish surgical supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage to meet the needs of surgical procedures.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, equipment usage, and patient care activities, documenting relevant information in electronic health records (EHR) or paper-based systems.

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Some employers may prefer candidates with additional vocational training or certification in surgical technology or a related field.

  • Certification: Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) may be preferred or required by some employers. Certification programs are typically offered by professional organizations such as the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

  • Experience: Previous experience working in surgical settings, such as operating rooms or surgical centers, is often preferred. Senior positions may require several years of experience as a theatre assistant or surgical technologist.

  • Knowledge of Surgical Procedures: Familiarity with common surgical procedures, surgical instruments, and sterile techniques is essential for effectively assisting surgical teams and ensuring patient safety.


  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in handling and operating surgical instruments, equipment, and technology used in the operating room, as well as knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control practices.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow precise instructions are essential for maintaining sterile environments, organizing surgical setups, and ensuring the accuracy of documentation.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team, communicating effectively and contributing to a positive and efficient work environment.

  • Physical Stamina: The role may involve prolonged periods of standing, lifting, and physical exertion, so candidates should have the physical stamina and dexterity to perform tasks safely and effectively.

  • Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to handle the fast-paced and dynamic nature of surgical environments, including the ability to remain calm under pressure and respond quickly to changing priorities or emergencies.

• Shortlisted candidates shall, where applicable, be required to bring their original certificates, letters of appointment, three copies of completed PSF 3, Registration Certificates and Valid Practicing Licenses and evidence of active service, at the oral interview.
• Candidates who will present forged certificates and other documents shall be handed over to the Police for appropriate action.
• Health Workers who are on long-term training (one year and above) must not apply.
