The IRC provides vital support to Ugandans rebuilding from decades of war while also hosting refugees from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The IRC began operations in northern Uganda in 1998, responding to the displacement and devastation caused by the Lord’s Resistance Army. In 2002, the IRC expanded to the conflict-affected Karamoja region and started working with refugees in Kampala in 2011. Following the South Sudanese refugee influx in 2015, the IRC scaled up its response in the West Nile region.
Currently, the IRC operates in over 40 countries, including 9 districts in Uganda: Kitgum, Lamwo, Kyegegwa, Moroto, Amudat, Yumbe, Arua, Kasese, and Kampala. By promoting durable solutions that focus on saving lives, strengthening institutions, and supporting social cohesion, the IRC aims to bring people from harm to home, laying the foundation for long-term stability and development. Project Overview
Today, Uganda is a host to the largest refugee population on the African continent and the third largest in the world. It is also dealing with multiple shocks from over the border displacement, outbreaks, and the growing impacts of climate change.
To address numerous SRH needs for humanitarian populations in Uganda, the IRC piloted and closed SHIFT project (Shifting Paradigms for SRHR in Emergencies) a transformative approach to local partnerships that aims to overcome partnership inequalities, challenge the status quo and shift power back to local institutions, change agents and women and girls to sustainability advance SRH in fragile settings. SHIFT was implemented in collaboration with the Agency for Cooperation in Research & Development (ACORD Uganda) and Women and Rural Development Network (WORUDET), two dynamic civil society organizations working in Uganda refugee settlements, as well as Lamwo and Yumbe health districts. This current project builds on our existing partnerships with WORUDET, ACORD Uganda and district health authorities to 1) Design, implement and generate evidence on innovative SRHR self-care interventions in refugee settings. 2)Contribute to a locally led movement for self-care that serves the unique needs of displaced populations in the country.
