Job Description

These duties and requirements may vary depending on the specific healthcare organization, setting, and level of responsibility associated with the Principal Nursing Officer role. Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Oversight:

  • Clinical Standards: Ensure that nursing care adheres to evidence-based practices, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Patient Safety: Implement and monitor protocols and procedures to enhance patient safety and minimize risks of errors or adverse events.

  • Quality Improvement: Lead quality improvement initiatives related to nursing care, patient outcomes, and healthcare processes.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and departments to promote integrated patient care and multidisciplinary teamwork.

  • Staff Development: Support the professional development and continuing education of nursing staff to enhance clinical skills and competency.


Management and Administration:

  • Staffing and Scheduling: Oversee staffing levels, nurse-patient ratios, and scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and efficient use of nursing resources.

  • Performance Management: Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and facilitate professional development for nursing staff.

  • Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Participate in budget planning, resource allocation, and fiscal management activities for nursing services.

  • Policy Development: Develop and implement nursing policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with nursing standards, licensure requirements, and accreditation standards set forth by regulatory bodies.


Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Leadership Development: Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to nursing staff, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and professional growth.

  • Change Management: Lead change initiatives and organizational transformations within the nursing department, promoting innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts and resolve issues within the nursing team, promoting effective communication and collaboration.

  • Advocacy: Advocate for nursing staff and patient needs within the organization, ensuring that nursing perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.

  • Community Engagement: Represent the nursing department in community outreach initiatives, partnerships, and stakeholder engagement activities.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited nursing program. Some positions may require a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related advanced degree.

  • Licensure: Current and valid nursing license or registration in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Experience: Several years of progressive nursing experience, including supervisory or managerial roles. Experience in a leadership capacity within a healthcare setting is typically required.

  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership qualities, including communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Clinical Expertise: Demonstrated clinical expertise in nursing practice, with a comprehensive understanding of nursing standards, protocols, and best practices.

  • Management Skills: Proficiency in staff supervision, performance management, budgeting, and resource allocation.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of nursing licensure requirements, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines applicable to healthcare facilities.

  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying abreast of advances in nursing practice, healthcare technology, and regulatory changes.

• Shortlisted candidates shall, where applicable, be required to bring their original certificates, letters of appointment, three copies of completed PSF 3, Registration Certificates and Valid Practicing Licenses and evidence of active service, at the oral interview.
• Candidates who will present forged certificates and other documents shall be handed over to the Police for appropriate action.
• Health Workers who are on long-term training (one year and above) must not apply.
