These duties and requirements may vary depending on the specific healthcare organization, laboratory setting, and level of responsibility associated with the Senior Medical Laboratory Technician role. Additionally, continuing education and staying current with advances in laboratory technology and practices are essential for success in this position.

  • Laboratory Testing: Perform a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures, including but not limited to hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.

  • Specimen Collection: Collect and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, tissue samples, and other bodily fluids, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and storage.

  • Instrumentation: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation, such as automated analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges, and spectrophotometers, ensuring accuracy and reliability of test results.

  • Quality Control: Perform quality control checks and calibration procedures on laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and precision of test results, and compliance with regulatory standards.


  • Data Analysis: Analyze test results, interpret findings, and report abnormal or critical results to healthcare providers in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of laboratory tests, procedures, and results, ensuring completeness and confidentiality of patient information.

  • Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot technical issues and problems encountered during laboratory testing, including instrument malfunctions, sample contamination, and quality control failures.

  • Training and Supervision: Provide training, supervision, and guidance to junior laboratory staff, including medical laboratory technicians and assistants, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures and safety protocols.

  • Customer Service: Interact with healthcare providers, patients, and other stakeholders in a professional and courteous manner, addressing their needs, inquiries, and concerns related to laboratory testing.

  • Education: Associate degree in medical laboratory technology or a related field from an accredited program. Some positions may require a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related discipline.

  • Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) from a recognized certifying agency, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA).

  • Experience: Several years of experience working as a medical laboratory technician, with proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures across different laboratory disciplines.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory techniques and procedures, including specimen collection, sample processing, test performance, and result interpretation.


  • Laboratory Safety: Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, including handling of hazardous materials, biohazardous waste disposal, and infection control measures.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in laboratory testing, documentation, and data analysis.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with healthcare providers, patients, and laboratory staff.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot technical problems, resolve issues, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

• Shortlisted candidates shall, where applicable, be required to bring their original certificates, letters of appointment, three copies of completed PSF 3, Registration Certificates and Valid Practicing Licenses and evidence of active service, at the oral interview.
• Candidates who will present forged certificates and other documents shall be handed over to the Police for appropriate action.
• Health Workers who are on long-term training (one year and above) must not apply.
