Job Description
Reporting to the Manager Legal Affairs, the Senior Legal Officer offers timely and professional legal advice across all departments to ensure compliance with the law and good corporate governance. The role includes interpreting legal texts, drafting and reviewing contracts and agreements, negotiating favorable terms for the company, monitoring legal changes, and supporting dispute resolution processes. The Senior Legal Officer will also assist in legal research, policy development, training of staff on legal matters, and mentoring junior legal personnel. This role involves collaboration across departments, particularly with the Directorate of Investments, to support project implementation and ensure legal integrity throughout.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Provide accurate and timely legal advice across various directorates.
Interpret and apply laws, regulations, and legal precedents to specific cases and corporate issues.
Ensure compliance with corporate governance and legal standards.
Collaborate with the Directorate of Investments and other departments to support project development and implementation.
Draft, review, and amend contracts, agreements, and legal documents.
Participate in negotiating favorable legal terms for the Corporation.
Maintain organized legal records, contracts, and correspondence.
Ensure legal documents are properly filed and easily accessible.
Monitor relevant legal and regulatory changes to ensure compliance.
Support the development and implementation of internal policies to align with legal standards.
Provide assistance in managing legal disputes and coordinate with external counsel.
Represent the Corporation in legal proceedings, arbitration, and mediation.
Identify and mitigate legal risks through proactive recommendations.
Conduct legal research to support decision-making and policy creation.
Share legal expertise to support team development.
Supervise and mentor junior staff, provide regular feedback, and promote team collaboration.
Provide training to employees on legal and compliance-related topics.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized institution.
Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice and must be an enrolled Advocate with a valid practicing certificate authorized to appear before the High Court.
A Master’s Degree in Law, Mining Law, Natural Resources Law, Management, or a related field is required.
Experience:
Minimum of six (6) years of relevant legal experience in a public or private institution involved in natural resources, with at least four (4) years in a senior role.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong leadership and managerial abilities.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Proven relationship management skills for engaging with Development Partners, Government bodies, and other stakeholders.
Ability to provide independent, well-informed legal advice to senior management.
Sound understanding of Ugandan legal frameworks, particularly in natural resources and mining law.
