About the Organisation

The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Legal Advice: Provide legal advice and guidance to senior management, departments, and staff on a wide range of legal matters, including contracts, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, labor law, intellectual property, and litigation.

  • Contract Management: Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret contracts, agreements, and legal documents. Ensure that contracts comply with legal requirements, protect the organization's interests, and mitigate risks.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Monitor regulatory developments, laws, and regulations relevant to the organization's operations. Develop and implement compliance programs, policies, and procedures to ensure adherence to legal requirements.

  • Risk Management: Identify legal risks and vulnerabilities in business operations, contracts, and policies. Develop risk mitigation strategies and provide recommendations to minimize legal exposure and liability.

  • Litigation Management: Manage legal disputes, claims, and litigation matters involving the organization. Liaise with external counsel, gather evidence, prepare legal briefs, and represent the organization in negotiations, mediations, and court proceedings.

  • Corporate Governance: Ensure compliance with corporate governance principles and legal requirements. Advise on board governance matters, annual general meetings, shareholder relations, and regulatory filings.

  • Intellectual Property: Manage intellectual property assets, including trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets. Conduct intellectual property audits, registrations, and enforcement actions to protect the organization's intellectual property rights.

  • Policy Development: Develop, review, and update organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure legal compliance, ethical standards, and best practices.

  • Training and Education: Provide legal training and education to employees, managers, and stakeholders on legal issues, compliance requirements, and risk management strategies.

  • Due Diligence: Conduct legal due diligence reviews in mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and other transactions. Identify legal risks, liabilities, and potential legal issues that may impact business decisions.

  • Corporate Transactions: Support corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and strategic alliances. Draft transactional documents, conduct legal analysis, and advise on legal implications.

  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including regulators, government agencies, legal professionals, industry associations, and business partners.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in law (LLB) is typically required. Many employers prefer candidates with additional qualifications such as a Master of Laws (LLM) or specialized certifications in relevant legal areas.

  • Legal License: Admission to the bar or membership in a legal professional organization is often required. Candidates must possess a valid license to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.

  • Experience: Several years of legal experience, including experience in a law firm or corporate legal department. Experience in a senior legal role or in a specialized area of law relevant to the organization's industry is preferred.

  • Industry Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the organization's industry, business operations, and regulatory environment. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards is essential.

  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess complex legal issues, identify risks, and develop effective solutions.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate legal concepts, provide clear and concise advice, and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Negotiation Skills: Proficiency in negotiation techniques to represent the organization's interests in contract negotiations, settlements, and other legal matters.

  • Ethical Standards: High ethical standards and integrity to uphold professional ethics, confidentiality, and trustworthiness in handling sensitive legal matters.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, external counsel, and other stakeholders to achieve legal objectives and support business goals.

  • Time Management: Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and handle a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Adaptability: Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changes in legal requirements, business needs, and organizational priorities.

  • Leadership Abilities: Leadership skills to lead legal initiatives, supervise junior legal staff, and influence decision-making at the executive level.
