About the Organisation

The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching:

  • Course Development: Develop and update courses in structural engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This may include designing syllabi, selecting appropriate textbooks, and creating instructional materials.

  • Classroom Instruction: Deliver lectures, conduct seminars, and facilitate discussions on various topics within structural engineering, such as structural analysis, design principles, structural dynamics, and advanced materials.

  • Laboratory Supervision: Oversee laboratory sessions to provide hands-on experience with structural testing, modeling, and analysis techniques. Ensure proper safety protocols are followed in laboratory settings.

  • Student Advising: Mentor students in their academic and career development, including advising on course selection, research opportunities, internships, and career pathways in structural engineering.

  • Capstone Projects: Supervise and evaluate student projects, theses, and dissertations related to structural engineering. Provide guidance on research methodologies, data analysis, and project execution.


Research:

  • Research Leadership: Lead research projects in structural engineering, including securing funding, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and disseminating research findings through publications and presentations.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, industry partners, and research institutions on collaborative research initiatives addressing challenges in structural engineering, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable construction practices.

  • Publications: Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in structural engineering through scholarly publications and presentations.

  • Grant Writing: Prepare grant proposals to secure funding from government agencies, industry partners, and philanthropic organizations to support research activities in structural engineering.


Academic Leadership:

  • Curriculum Development: Participate in the development and revision of the structural engineering curriculum to ensure alignment with industry standards, accreditation requirements, and emerging trends in the field.

  • Program Assessment: Participate in program assessment and accreditation processes to evaluate the effectiveness of the structural engineering program and identify areas for improvement.

  • Faculty Development: Provide mentorship and support to junior faculty members and graduate teaching assistants. Foster a collegial and collaborative academic environment within the department.

  • Committee Service: Serve on departmental, college, and university committees to contribute to academic governance, strategic planning, and institutional initiatives.


Professional Engagement:

  • Professional Society Involvement: Participate in professional societies and organizations related to structural engineering, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), or the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).

  • Continuing Education: Stay informed about advancements in structural engineering practice, codes, and standards through participation in workshops, seminars, and professional development activities.

  • Industry Collaboration: Engage with industry partners, consulting firms, government agencies, and professional organizations to promote collaboration, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange in structural engineering.

  • Public Outreach: Engage in public outreach activities to promote awareness of structural engineering principles, safety practices, and the importance of infrastructure resilience in the community.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A Ph.D. in civil engineering with a specialization in structural engineering or a closely related field is typically required for a senior lecturer position. A master's degree may be acceptable with significant professional experience.

  • Teaching Experience: Demonstrated excellence in teaching structural engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Experience in curriculum development, course coordination, and student advising is valued.

  • Research Track Record: A strong record of scholarly research in structural engineering, evidenced by publications in reputable journals, conference presentations, and research grants.

  • Professional Experience: Substantial experience in structural engineering practice, preferably in consulting firms, research laboratories, or government agencies. Professional licensure as a structural engineer is desirable.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively convey complex engineering concepts to students, colleagues, and industry stakeholders.

  • Leadership Abilities: Leadership qualities to lead research projects, mentor students and junior faculty, and contribute to academic and institutional leadership roles.

  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, industry partners, and external stakeholders to address complex challenges in structural engineering.

  • Commitment to Diversity: Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service activities within the academic community.

  • Professional Ethics: Adherence to ethical standards and professional integrity in research, teaching, and service activities, including compliance with institutional policies and professional codes of conduct.
