Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Kyambogo University (KYU) was established with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Deliver undergraduate and graduate-level courses in applied mathematics, including lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions. Develop course materials, syllabi, assignments, and assessments that align with program objectives and promote student learning.

  • Curriculum Development: Contribute to the development and revision of the applied mathematics curriculum, including the design of new courses, integration of emerging topics, and alignment with industry needs and academic standards.

  • Research: Conduct original research in applied mathematics or related fields, leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences, and securing research funding. Collaborate with colleagues, students, and external partners on interdisciplinary research projects.

  • Student Advising: Provide academic and career advising to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in applied mathematics. Mentor students in research projects, thesis/dissertation work, and professional development activities.

  • Service: Serve on departmental and university committees, contributing to academic governance, strategic planning, and program assessment. Participate in professional organizations and engage in outreach activities to promote mathematics education and research.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across disciplines to foster interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives. Build partnerships with industry, government agencies, and community organizations to address real-world challenges using mathematical techniques.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in applied mathematics through ongoing professional development activities, including attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. Pursue opportunities for continuing education and certification in specialized areas of interest.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in applied mathematics, mathematics, or a closely related field is typically required for a lecturer position in applied mathematics. Candidates nearing completion of their doctoral degree may also be considered.

  • Teaching Experience: Previous experience teaching mathematics courses at the undergraduate or graduate level is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills, a passion for teaching, and the ability to engage students in mathematical concepts and problem-solving techniques.

  • Research Skills: Demonstrated research expertise in applied mathematics, evidenced by a strong publication record, presentations at conferences, and participation in research projects. Candidates should have the potential to develop an independent research program and secure external funding.

  • Mathematical Proficiency: Proficiency in mathematical modeling, numerical methods, statistical analysis, and other relevant areas of applied mathematics. Candidates should possess a solid understanding of mathematical theory and its applications in diverse fields.

  • Programming Skills: Familiarity with mathematical software packages (e.g., MATLAB, Mathematica, Python) and programming languages commonly used in scientific computing and data analysis. Experience with computational methods and simulation techniques is beneficial.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from different disciplines, such as engineering, physics, computer science, and biology, to address complex problems using mathematical approaches.

  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to convey mathematical concepts to students, colleagues, and external stakeholders. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with diverse audiences.
