Aga Khan University, a private, self-governing international university chartered in Pakistan in 1983, is a role model for academic, research and service programmes in health and higher education in the developing world. The University currently has teaching sites in Pakistan, East Africa, United Kingdom and Afghanistan, and is a major component of Aga Khan Development Network.
The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST); an institution of The Aga Khan Development Network, completed a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018.
This expansion aimed at improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to become an ultramodern 170 bed facility to increase its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to a tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital.
The Phase II development focused on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of Orthopaedics and Trauma, Diagnostic Imaging, Critical Care and Women and Child Health programmes.
The Hospital is JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers Postgraduate Medical Education programs leading to Master of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Paediatrics and Child Health.
It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania. Currently, 26 such clinics have been established across the country and linked the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.
The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) is completing a major phase III expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2024. This expansion is aimed at establishing a new innovative comprehensive cancer center aiming at strengthening cancer care in Tanzania through PPP with Tanzanian-based CCP partners.
The Tanzania Comprehensive Cancer Centre is a proposed high-quality, evidence-based Comprehensive Centre aimed at reducing the burden of cancer morbidity and mortality in two targeted Regions (Dar es Salaam and Mwanza). The Centre’s 4 major components include a) Improve and expand existing Oncology infrastructure to provide more comprehensive Oncology care through health systems strengthening. b) Build the capacity of staff in participating institutions to provide high quality cancer care by trained Specialists, and train and retain local professionals through accredited programs; c) Strengthen community Cancer Care practices by delivering affordable, comprehensive health care services for preventive services including primary prevention, screening, and early detection and d) Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders and participating institutions on joint research agenda and initiatives.

Reporting to the Head, Oncology Department, you will be responsible for diagnosing and treating cancer patients using radiation therapy in collaboration with other medical professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. You will be expected to be an active member of the multidisciplinary health care team, participating in quality improvement activities including continuing medical education, research and professional development programs in the Hospital. Additionally, you will be responsible to:
diagnose patients with cancer and develop a radiation therapy plan based on the patient’s individual needs
administer radiation therapy treatments to patients in accordance with the prescribed plan
Monitor patients’ responses to therapy and adjust plans as necessary
provide patient education on radiation therapy and its effects
maintain accurate patient records and document all treatments
monitor and evaluate patient outcomes and success of treatments
collaborate with other medical professionals as needed
communicate effectively with patients and their families, explaining diagnoses, treatment options, and post-operative care plans
actively involve in teaching and learning postgraduate general surgery residents, interns and organize and actively participate in various clinical and academic activities
train, mentor junior specialists and supervise postgraduate residents to be able to independently manage surgical problems and surgical oncology operations to a high level of competence
work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and support staff to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care
develop and implement quality cancer care projects and comply with jcia patient safety standards in maintaining quality surgical care.

a Bachelors Degree in Medicine and/or Bachelors of Surgery or equivalent
a Masters of Medicine in Radiation Oncology from a recognized Institution
Super Specialty Training or Fellowship qualification or Board certified in Radiation Oncology
a valid practicing License
at least 5 years post qualification ‘experience working in a similar role as Radiation Oncologist with proven experience in performing a variety of radiation oncology procedures.
