Job Description
The selected candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and technical guidance to clients and internal investment/advisory teams on E&S risk management. This role involves due diligence for new investments, portfolio monitoring, policy input, stakeholder engagement, and contributing to regional E&S capacity building. Additionally, the specialist will serve as the Regional Industry Lead (RIL) for infrastructure in Eastern Africa, supporting project categorization, planning, and risk assessment. The position reports to the ESG Regional Manager for Eastern Africa.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead/contribute to E&S reviews and risk assessments for new investments and advisory engagements
Develop public disclosure and internal documentation on E&S matters
Design and recommend E&S mitigation and value-add solutions for clients
Provide ongoing guidance to IFC teams across the project investment cycle
Draft E&S legal conditions for investment projects
Supervise and manage consultant teams and E&S assessment deliverables
Monitor and support portfolio clients in meeting IFC E&S requirements
Analyze E&S trends and contribute to policy enhancements
Respond to CAO and IEG evaluations when required
Support client and team E&S capacity building initiatives
Prepare management briefs and contribute to internal knowledge sharing
Supervise and guide Short-Term Consultants (STCs)
Serve as Regional Industry Lead (RIL) for infrastructure: pre-screening, categorization, supervision planning, and compliance tracking

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Master’s degree in environmental science, engineering, sociology, or related fields
At least 10 years of experience in E&S management, preferably in the private infrastructure sector
Experience in emerging markets, particularly fragile/conflict-affected areas
Familiarity with IFC/World Bank E&S Policies and Performance Standards
Excellent project management, analytical, and strategic thinking skills
Strong interpersonal, communication, and diplomatic skills
High integrity and emotional intelligence
Proficiency in English; French is an added advantage
Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure in a multicultural environment
Willingness to travel frequently
