Job Description
Reporting to the Manager – Sustainability, the Senior Environment Officer will be responsible for overseeing environmental planning, permitting, and compliance monitoring for UNMC projects. The officer will ensure that all operations adhere to environmental laws, conduct and review Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), engage stakeholders, and contribute to environmental reporting and audits. The role also includes managing risks related to pollution, waste, noise, and toxic contamination. This position plays a key role in supporting the company’s QHSE Management System and ensuring sustainable practices are integrated into mineral development projects.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Ensure UNMC operations comply with national environmental laws and industry best practices
Support development and implementation of the company’s QHSE Management System
Conduct and review Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs)
Review contractor-specific Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs)
Apply for, maintain, and ensure compliance with environmental permits and licenses
Monitor environmental compliance and ensure environmental risks are addressed
Engage stakeholders and coordinate public consultations for UNMC operations
Liaise with government agencies to report and discuss environmental performance
Investigate environmental incidents involving pollution, accidents, or waste mismanagement
Conduct internal environmental audits of active operations
Review partner reports and participate in joint environmental performance evaluations
Prepare detailed environmental performance reports for UNMC projects
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental and Natural Resources Management, Environmental/Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field from a recognized institution
Master’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Health, Safety and Environment, or a related field
Experience:
At least six (6) years of relevant experience in environmental management for large infrastructure or natural resource projects
Experience in mineral exploration and production, or social development projects is an added advantage
Key Skills and Competencies:
In-depth knowledge of Uganda's environmental laws and international environmental standards
Familiarity with QHSE management systems (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 45001)
Strong understanding of environmental technologies and waste management practices
Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Strong data analysis and environmental report writing skills
Excellent problem-solving and compliance monitoring abilities
Age Requirement:30 to 45 years
