Uganda Management Institute is a government-owned national center for training, research, and consultancy in the field of management and administration in Uganda. It is one of the nine public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country outside the military.

Research Ethical Committee (REC) Administrator Jobs – Uganda Management Institute (UMI)

Job Description

Uganda Management Institute (UMI) is a Management Development Institute with a Mission “to Excel in Developing Practical and Sustainable Administration, Leadership and Management Capacity”. It provides management training, consultancy and research services in response to the demands of the public, private, development partners, CSOs, the Institute offers high quality career development management courses at Certificate, Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma and Higher Degree Levels. The Institute’s activities are currently carried out at the main campus in Kampala and its Branches in Mbarara, Gulu and Mbale.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Annual Reports: Prepare and submit annual reports to relevant regulatory bodies, summarizing the activities and decisions of the REC.

  • Audit Preparation: Assist in preparing for audits by regulatory bodies or internal audits, ensuring that all records are up-to-date and compliant with regulatory requirements.

  • Archiving: Manage the secure archiving of REC documents, ensuring that records are retained in accordance with legal and institutional requirements.


Committee Liaison:

  • Member Coordination: Communicate with REC members regarding meeting dates, agenda items, and any preparatory work required for reviewing research proposals.

  • Follow-up Actions: Coordinate any follow-up actions required by the REC, such as requesting additional information from researchers or issuing approval letters.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Act as a liaison between the REC, researchers, institutional leadership, and other stakeholders, ensuring clear and effective communication.


  • Continuous Improvement:

  • Process Enhancement: Identify and implement improvements to the REC’s administrative processes, such as streamlining application processing or enhancing communication with researchers.

  • Technology Utilization: Leverage technology, such as electronic submission systems or databases, to improve efficiency in managing REC activities.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as life sciences, health sciences, social sciences, or ethics. A Master’s degree or specialized training in research ethics or bioethics is an advantage.

  • Ethical Knowledge: A strong understanding of research ethics principles, regulations, and guidelines (e.g., the Declaration of Helsinki, Belmont Report, GCP).


Experience:

  • Administrative Experience: Prior experience in an administrative role, preferably within a research, academic, or healthcare setting.

  • Ethics Committee Experience: Experience working with or within a Research Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board (IRB) is highly desirable.

  • Research Knowledge: Familiarity with the research process, including the design, conduct, and ethical review of research studies.


Skills and Competencies:

  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.

  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in reviewing documents and maintaining records.

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with researchers, committee members, and other stakeholders.

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to address issues or concerns related to ethics applications, processes, or compliance in a constructive manner.


Technical Skills:

  • IT Proficiency: Competency in using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and experience with electronic ethics submission systems or databases.

  • Data Management: Experience in managing and organizing data, including secure handling of confidential or sensitive information.
