Job Description

Solidaridad ECA is implementing the Climate Heroes project, which aims to enhance the resilience of farming communities to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through carbon sequestration, and connect farmers to Voluntary Carbon Markets. In particular, the Project Associate will assist in providing support for the implementation of carbon farming, carbon trading, and carbon financing activities within smallholder coffee farming communities in Uganda’s coffee-growing regions.
The Project Associate reports to the Projects Officer at the national and regional levels and works closely with the Project Manager at the country level. The Project Associate collaborates with the Project Officers, Senior Project Officers, Project innovation theme advisors, and the quality function teams. Their role is to coordinate people and processes to ensure the timely delivery of the project and achievement of its intended outcomes. The Project Associate will also actively engage in business development activities.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Conduct research and analysis to develop best practice programs using participatory community-based approaches.
Implement best practice programs in areas such as soil management, intercropping, optimal planting densities, integrated pest management, and designing resilient agricultural production systems.
Establish demonstration plots and support farmer field schools to introduce appropriate agricultural techniques and technologies aimed at improving production.
Train farmers on regenerative agriculture practices, including organic waste management, wastewater management, new technologies, and provide support for implementing innovative environmental solutions.
Develop training curricula and conduct capacity- building activities for farmer groups to strengthen their organizational capabilities.
Design and implement strategic tools and plans to assess project performance and manage finances for farmers and farming groups.
Foster peer-to-peer learning among farmers on best practices and across cooperatives/associations.
Train farmers on how to collect data using digital tools provided by Solidaridad.
Build and maintain positive relationships with implementing partners, local communities, and authorities at all levels to ensure project understanding and support during implementation.
Contribute to Solidaridad’s funding portfolio by supporting the development of high-quality concept notes and proposals.
Coordinate and nurture mutually beneficial partnerships with stakeholders, including partners, service providers, government departments, local development organizations, and the private sector.
Prepare and submit monthly project reports, budgets, and work plans in line with Solidaridad’s planning process and deadlines.
Gather and submit project monitoring and evaluation data to capture outcomes, impacts, and lessons learned.
Facilitate the formation of farmer groups and assist in the identification and selection of lead farmers.
Provide training to farmers on group formation, leadership, financial literacy, teamwork, and sustainability.
Assist in the development and enforcement of group bylaws.
Work with Extension Technicians to facilitate the registration of coffee agroforestry farmers.
Raise awareness among farmers and stakeholders about carbon farming and trading in agroforestry systems.
Support the enhancement of farmers’ skills in agroforestry practices, management, and the establishment and management of tree nurseries.
Collaborate with the Gender Officer to facilitate gender-focused training sessions.
Conduct biomass inventories to assess the carbon sequestration potential of farming practices.
Collect relevant project data for reporting and analysis.
Facilitate the distribution of seedlings to farmers.
Monitor tree performance and survival rates within agroforestry systems.
Manage and maintain farmer records for project tracking and reporting.
Ensure transparency and compliance in carbon credit transfers.
Facilitate the use of coffee traceability tools for better farm management.
Supervise Field Extension Technicians to ensure the effective delivery of training and extension services.
Support the implementation of communication plans and collaborate with the communication officer and technical teams to create compelling content for various audiences, including success stories, key messages, social media graphics, articles, reports, and thought leadership pieces to showcase and promote Solidaridad’s impact.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Agroforestry, Agricultural Extension, or a related field.
A minimum of 3 years of solid experience in agroforestry and agricultural extension work.
An understanding of the policy environment, issues and stakeholders in the agriculture and/or agribusiness sector in East and Central Africa.
Fluent in spoken and written English, other language skills proficiency desirable.
Knowledge of strategic, human resource, financial and quality management.
Specific job requirements
