Job Description

These duties and requirements may vary depending on the specific healthcare organization, practice setting, and level of responsibility associated with the Principal Dispenser role. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Medication Dispensing: Supervise and participate in the dispensing of prescription medications and other pharmaceutical products to patients, ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Patient Counseling: Provide medication counseling and education to patients regarding proper medication use, potential side effects, drug interactions, and other relevant information.

  • Prescription Review: Review and evaluate prescriptions for accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness of therapy, consulting with prescribers or other healthcare providers as needed.

  • Inventory Management: Oversee pharmacy inventory management processes, including ordering, stocking, and monitoring medication supplies to ensure availability and minimize waste.

  • Quality Assurance: Implement quality assurance measures and protocols to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of dispensed medications, including medication error prevention strategies and adverse drug reaction monitoring.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, regulations, and standards set forth by regulatory agencies such as the FDA, DEA, and state boards of pharmacy.


  • Staff Supervision: Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support personnel, to ensure efficient operations and high-quality patient care.

  • Training and Education: Conduct training and continuing education programs for pharmacy staff to enhance their knowledge, skills, and competency in pharmacy practice and customer service.

  • Customer Service: Ensure that pharmacy staff provide exceptional customer service to patients, addressing their needs, concerns, and inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Some employers may prefer candidates with post-secondary education or certification in pharmacy technology or a related field.

  • Certification: Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (e.g., Certified Pharmacy Technician, CPhT) may be required or preferred by some employers. Certification requirements vary by state.

  • Experience: Several years of experience working as a pharmacy technician or dispenser, with demonstrated proficiency in medication dispensing, inventory management, and customer service.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of pharmacy laws, regulations, and standards governing medication dispensing, patient privacy, and controlled substances.


  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in pharmacy software systems, medication labeling, packaging, and compounding techniques.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and pharmacy staff.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in medication dispensing, prescription review, and documentation.

  • Leadership Abilities: Leadership qualities, including the ability to lead and motivate a team, resolve conflicts, and foster a positive work environment.

• Shortlisted candidates shall, where applicable, be required to bring their original certificates, letters of appointment, three copies of completed PSF 3, Registration Certificates and Valid Practicing Licenses and evidence of active service, at the oral interview.
• Candidates who will present forged certificates and other documents shall be handed over to the Police for appropriate action.
• Health Workers who are on long-term training (one year and above) must not apply.
