Job Description
Job Title: Power and Energy Design Engineer
Organisation: NFT Consult Limited
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of power and energy solutions for Uganda telecommunications infrastructure.
Ensure efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable energy systems, leveraging a mix of solar (75% of sites), grid, generators, and batteries.
Address Uganda’s unique energy challenges, including high energy costs, grid reliability, and compliance with local regulations.
Drive cost optimization, innovation, and adherence to SLA requirements for uninterrupted power supply.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a plus.
Experience
Minimum 5 years in telecom infrastructure, national grid systems, and alternative energy solutions.
Experience in power systems design, maintenance, and software tools (e.g., RMS).
Familiarity with Uganda’s regulatory environment for power systems.
Skills
Strong technical knowledge of solar, hybrid, and grid-connected systems.
Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
Budget management and financial planning knowledge.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficiency in English; knowledge of French is an added advantage.
DRIVING: Possess a valid driver’s license.
Excellent prioritization and organizational skills
Ability to work and deliver under pressure
Understanding and experience of Health & Safety guidelines, procedures and processes.
An understanding of diversity and how it relates to the role.

Key Performance Areas
Power System Design and Standardization
Develop and maintain design templates and standards for hybrid energy solutions (solar, grid, generator, batteries).
Oversee the implementation of smart grid and energy management tools, including RMS, ensuring seamless integration and operational efficiency.
Lead design optimization for energy systems, balancing cost-efficiency, scalability, and quality.
Conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy integration, ensuring alignment with local regulations.
Support tender and procurement processes by defining requirements and evaluating suppliers.
Cost Optimization and Budget Control
Identify opportunities to reduce energy costs through innovative technologies and efficient system designs.
Monitor and manage energy-related budgets, ensuring adherence to financial targets.
Analyse high fuel consumption sites and implement strategies to minimize dependency on generators.
Regularly report on cost-saving initiatives and their impact on the P&L.
Drive initiatives to lower energy costs, focusing on reducing high fuel consumption.
SLA Compliance and Operational Support
Ensure all power systems meet SLA requirements for uptime and reliability.
Support the resolution of energy-related issues at critical sites, ensuring minimal downtime.
Monitor compliance with SLA’s and ensure systems are maintained within budget.
Vendor and Contractor Management
Collaborate with the procurement team to define specifications, evaluate tenders, and onboard suppliers.
Monitor vendor compliance with group standards and ensure timely delivery of services.
Build and maintain relationships with local and international energy solution providers.
Compliance and Governance
Conduct regular audits of power infrastructure to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
Develop governance processes to mitigate risks and enhance operational safety.
Track and ensure adherence to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Team Collaboration and Capacity Building
Work closely with local teams and Group to align energy solutions with organizational goals.
Train and upskill local staff on the design, operation, and maintenance of power systems.
Promote knowledge sharing and support continuous improvement initiatives within the team.
Technology Innovation and Implementation
Pilot and evaluate emerging technologies to enhance energy efficiency and reliability.
Lead the deployment of renewable energy projects, including solar expansions and hybrid solutions.
Explore and integrate smart solutions for real-time energy monitoring and optimization.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting
Establish key metrics to monitor energy system performance across all sites.
Prepare regular reports detailing system uptime, cost savings, and operational improvements.
Use data-driven insights to recommend improvements and guide decision-making.
KPA KPI’S
Cost Efficiency: Reduce energy costs by 40% within the first year.
SLA Adherence: Maintain system uptime above 99.95%.
Compliance: Zero breaches of local regulations or group standards.
Innovation: Integrate and Implementation of at least 1 new technology annually.
Training Impact: 25% improvement in team performance scores post-training on new processes and technologies
SHERQ
Ensure full compliance with SHERQ regulations by all stakeholders (Client, projects contractors, Client Uganda Operations)
Quality control deliverables at the site
Monitor and maintain the quality of the execution projects by performing in-process and final quality checks
Ensure smooth site handover to the Operations and Maintenance section
Enforce efforts and systems put in place to mitigate climate change
Financial Management:
Prepare and defend project BC approval
Projects to be maintained within the approved BC price
Variations, submitted for approvals if inevitable
Support initial billing by the finance department
Uganda Vehicle policy is adhered to at all times
Avoid SLA breach penalties
