A Pharmacy Technician, also known as a Dispenser, plays a crucial role in assisting pharmacists with the preparation and dispensing of medications to patients. They are essential in ensuring that pharmacies operate smoothly and efficiently, providing both direct support to pharmacists and customer service to patients
Medication Preparation and Dispensing:
Accurately measure, count, and prepare medications for dispensing based on prescriptions from healthcare providers.
Label medications and prepare them for patient pick-up or delivery, ensuring all information is correct and complies with regulatory requirements.
Compound medications, such as ointments, creams, or liquids, under the supervision of a pharmacist, following specific recipes and protocols.
Prescription Processing:
Receive and interpret prescriptions from doctors or other healthcare professionals, ensuring they are complete, clear, and within the legal scope.
Enter prescription data into the pharmacy’s computer system accurately, including patient information, drug details, dosage, and instructions.
Verify that prescription details match the medications dispensed, checking for potential drug interactions or contraindications under the guidance of a pharmacist.
Customer Service:
Assist customers and patients in person, over the phone, or through electronic communication, providing information on medication use, dosage instructions, and potential side effects.
Address customer inquiries and concerns, referring complex questions or those requiring professional judgment to the pharmacist.
Manage the checkout process, including handling cash, credit card transactions, and insurance claims.
Inventory Management:
Monitor and manage pharmacy inventory levels, including ordering, receiving, and stocking medications and supplies.
Check for expired or damaged medications and remove them from inventory, ensuring the pharmacy complies with safety and regulatory standards.
Conduct regular inventory counts and audits to ensure accuracy and prevent stock shortages or excesses.
