Mortuary attendants play a vital role in providing compassionate care and support to deceased individuals and their families during times of grief and loss. By fulfilling their duties with professionalism, dignity, and respect, they contribute to the dignified handling and respectful treatment of the deceased
Deceased Handling: Receive, transport, and prepare deceased individuals for storage, viewing, or autopsy. Handle bodies with care, dignity, and respect, ensuring compliance with cultural and religious customs.
Mortuary Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of mortuary facilities, including preparation rooms, storage areas, and equipment. Clean and sanitize surfaces, equipment, and instruments used in handling deceased individuals.
Storage and Preservation: Properly store and preserve deceased bodies using refrigeration units or embalming techniques as required. Monitor temperature and humidity levels to ensure optimal preservation conditions.
Autopsy Assistance: Assist pathologists or medical examiners during autopsies by preparing the body, providing instruments and supplies, and maintaining a sterile environment. Document autopsy findings and assist with specimen collection.
Identification and Records: Verify the identity of deceased individuals and maintain accurate records of their admission, storage, and release. Label bodies and belongings with identifying information and maintain confidentiality.
Family Support: Provide compassionate support and assistance to grieving families and relatives. Answer questions, provide information, and facilitate viewing or visitation arrangements as requested.
Transportation: Arrange and coordinate transportation of deceased individuals to and from mortuary facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, and other locations. Ensure compliance with transportation regulations and safety protocols.
Documentation and Reporting: Complete required paperwork, forms, and reports related to deceased individuals, including death certificates, release forms, and inventory records. Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with legal requirements.
Health and Safety Compliance: Adhere to occupational health and safety guidelines, infection control protocols, and biohazard procedures. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety practices to minimize risks.
Teamwork and Collaboration: Collaborate with funeral directors, coroners, law enforcement agencies, and other professionals involved in death investigations or funeral arrangements. Coordinate activities and communicate effectively with team members.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Additional training or certification in mortuary science, funeral service, or anatomy may be beneficial.
Physical Fitness: Good physical health and stamina are essential for handling deceased individuals and performing tasks that may involve lifting, moving, and bending. Ability to lift heavy objects and stand for extended periods.
Compassion and Sensitivity: Compassionate, empathetic, and respectful attitude towards deceased individuals and their families. Sensitivity to cultural, religious, and emotional aspects of death and bereavement.
Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling paperwork, records, and identification. Ability to follow procedures meticulously and maintain confidentiality.
Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with colleagues, families, and other professionals in a sensitive and professional manner. Ability to convey information clearly and compassionately.
Ethical Conduct: Adherence to ethical standards, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions and activities. Respect for the dignity and rights of deceased individuals and their families.
Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines governing mortuary operations, including health and safety regulations, public health laws, and funeral industry regulations.
Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of mortuary equipment, instruments, and procedures. Familiarity with embalming techniques, sanitation practices, and infection control protocols.
Problem-Solving Abilities: Ability to assess situations, identify problems, and take appropriate action in a calm and composed manner. Capacity to handle unexpected challenges or emergencies with professionalism and sensitivity.
Continuing Education: Willingness to participate in ongoing training, professional development, and continuing education opportunities to stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill the following posts which exist in Apac District Local Government and Apac Municipal Council.
Applications should be submitted in triplicates filled in own hand writing on Public Service Commission Form 3 (Revised 2008) to the Secretary, District Service Commission, P.O. Box 1, Apac. Serving Officers should route their applications through their Heads of Departments or responsible officers for endorsement who should be informed of the closing date to avoid delay.
