Marketing involves identifying, understanding and satisfying the needs and wants of customers, while sales involves persuading and convincing customers to buy the products or services that the business offers. Marketing and sales work together to create value for both the business and the customers, and to achieve the business goals and objectives.
Marketing activities include conducting market research, segmenting and targeting the market, developing marketing strategies and plans, creating and delivering the marketing mix (product, price, place and promotion), and measuring and evaluating the marketing performance. Sales activities include generating leads, qualifying prospects, presenting and demonstrating the product or service, handling objections, closing the sale, and providing after-sales service and support. Sales activities are often guided and supported by the marketing activities, such as providing sales materials, tools and training.
Marketing and sales require different skills, knowledge and abilities. Marketing professionals need to be creative, analytical, strategic and customer-oriented. They need to have a broad understanding of the market, the customers, the competitors and the industry. Sales professionals need to be persuasive, confident, communicative and relationship-oriented.
