Job Description
The Locomotives & Railway Maintenance Manager will oversee the daily operations and maintenance of underground rail lines, locomotives, and associated infrastructure. Responsibilities include preventive and corrective maintenance scheduling, risk assessment, safety compliance, performance monitoring, and coordination with production teams to align transport logistics with mine output. The role also entails leading a team of operators and technicians, managing emergency protocols, conducting safety audits, and implementing system optimizations to enhance operational efficiency and minimize downtime.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Develop and implement maintenance schedules for locomotives, rail lines, and underground systems.
Conduct regular inspections and supervise all repair and preventive maintenance activities.
Monitor equipment performance to identify and resolve inefficiencies or malfunctions.
Ensure compliance with mine safety, environmental, and transport regulations.
Lead and manage teams of mechanics, operators, and support staff.
Coordinate transport schedules to align with production timelines.
Report incidents, investigate causes, and implement corrective measures.
Oversee rail track inspections, alignment, and repairs.
Optimize energy use and performance of lithium battery-powered systems.
Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure all team members are trained.
Communicate and collaborate with the mine’s planning and production departments.
Maintain detailed records of maintenance, inspections, and incidents.
Recommend and implement performance improvements and cost-saving initiatives.
Perform any other duties assigned by management.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education & Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Maintenance, Civil Engineering, Building Technology, or related fields with at least 4–5 years of experience; OR
Diploma in Engineering with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience.
Engineering Superintendent or Sectional/Inspecting Engineer Certificate of Competence from the Inspectorate Division of the Mineral Commission (IDMC).
Professional Engineer (PE) license from GhIE or IET-GH.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years in engineering roles with experience in underground mining operations.
Technical & Soft Skills:
In-depth knowledge of railway and locomotive systems in a mining context.
Strong team leadership and problem-solving abilities.
Proficiency in risk management, health and safety protocols.
Analytical thinking and resource management skills.
Strong communication and coordination skills.
