Job Description
The successful candidate will manage legal and regulatory risks across business functions, provide legal support to compliance in regulatory matters, and oversee external legal relations. They will also be responsible for ensuring effective operation of the Company Secretariat, maintaining corporate governance standards, supporting board meetings, organizing legal documentation, and facilitating timely filings. The role demands strategic legal insight, strong communication, team collaboration, and a proactive approach to risk management.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Legal Duties:
Manage legal and regulatory risks and ensure compliance with Absa Group Governance Standards.
Provide legal advice to support business objectives.
Work with external lawyers and manage legal expenditure.
Support Compliance with legal advisory in areas such as sanctions, money laundering, and financial crime.
Company Secretarial Oversight:
Maintain corporate governance standards and statutory compliance.
Organize Board and Board Committee meetings and prepare minutes/resolutions.
Manage Board documentation, statutory records, general meetings, and required filings.
Coordinate regulatory filings and provide legal support to senior management.
Ensure Board induction, training, and governance frameworks are in place.
Support finance in Board approval of integrated plans and financial statements.
Other Key Accountabilities:
Foster professional relationships and provide solutions-oriented legal guidance.
Engage in team initiatives and contribute to legal knowledge sharing.
Monitor legal/regulatory changes and assess their impact on the business.
Support risk and control objectives, including crisis coordination when required.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Essentials:
Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB)
Admission as an Advocate
Preferred:
Experience in banking/commercial legal practice (in-house or private sector)
Knowledge & Expertise:
Banking Law and Financial Services Compliance
Anti-Money Laundering Frameworks
Commercial contract drafting, retail/HR legal matters
Civil litigation and governance compliance
Skills:
Legal analysis and strategic thinking
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Advanced MS Office proficiency and spreadsheet use
Strong written and conversational English
High integrity, accountability, and solution-focused mindset
