About the Organisation

The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development: Develop and update courses in disability studies at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes designing syllabi, selecting textbooks, and creating instructional materials that cover a range of topics related to disability rights, inclusion, accessibility, and advocacy.

  • Classroom Instruction: Deliver lectures, facilitate discussions, and lead interactive activities on various aspects of disability studies, including disability history, culture, policy, and activism. Create inclusive learning environments that encourage critical thinking and respectful dialogue.

  • Student Advising: Provide academic and career advising to students interested in disability studies or pursuing degrees/certificates in related fields. Offer guidance on course selection, internships, research opportunities, and post-graduation pathways.

  • Research and Scholarship: Conduct scholarly research in disability studies, contributing to the academic literature and advancing knowledge in the field. This may involve empirical research, theoretical analysis, policy studies, or community-based participatory research.

  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with disability advocacy organizations, community groups, and stakeholders to address pressing issues affecting individuals with disabilities. Engage in outreach activities, public speaking engagements, and community-based projects aimed at raising awareness and promoting social change.

  • Service Leadership: Participate in departmental, college, and university committees, contributing to institutional governance, strategic planning, and program development. Provide leadership within professional organizations and academic societies dedicated to disability studies.

  • Teaching Innovation: Incorporate innovative teaching strategies, technologies, and pedagogical approaches to enhance student learning experiences in disability studies. Foster interdisciplinary collaborations and experiential learning opportunities, such as service-learning projects or field-based research.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A minimum of a master's degree in disability studies, special education, social work, sociology, psychology, or a related field is typically required for a lecturer position. A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) may be preferred for some institutions or tenure-track positions.

  • Teaching Experience: Demonstrated excellence in teaching disability studies courses at the college or university level. Experience working with diverse student populations, including students with disabilities, is highly valued.

  • Research Expertise: Strong research skills and a record of scholarly productivity in disability studies or related fields. This may include publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at academic conferences, and involvement in funded research projects.

  • Practical Experience: Experience working directly with individuals with disabilities, disability organizations, or disability-related programs/services is beneficial. Practical experience provides valuable insights into the lived experiences and needs of people with disabilities.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively convey complex concepts, engage with students, and collaborate with colleagues and community partners. The ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully about disability issues is essential.

  • Interdisciplinary Perspective: An interdisciplinary perspective that integrates knowledge from various fields (e.g., social sciences, humanities, education, public health) to understand disability as a multifaceted social phenomenon.

  • Commitment to Social Justice: A commitment to promoting social justice, equity, and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. An understanding of disability rights, advocacy strategies, and intersectional approaches to addressing systemic barriers and discrimination.

  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility standards, and digital tools used by individuals with disabilities. Ability to leverage technology for inclusive teaching, research, and communication purposes.

  • Cultural Competence: Cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse perspectives and experiences within the disability community, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and age.

  • Passion for Disability Studies: A genuine passion for disability studies and a commitment to advancing the rights, well-being, and empowerment of individuals with disabilities through education, research, and advocacy.
