Job Description

The Head of Credit will play a strategic leadership role within Zembo, overseeing all credit operations to ensure sustainable growth and effective portfolio management. This role involves defining and executing best practices in credit operations, developing credit policies, streamlining workflows, and building team capacity across credit and collections. You will manage the full credit lifecycle, ensuring creditworthiness, risk mitigation, and alignment with Zembo’s objectives. Working closely with operations, sales, and finance teams, you will drive efficient, compliant, and scalable credit operations that support Zembo’s growth.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Debt Recovery & Non-Performing Asset Management

  • NPL Reduction & Portfolio Management: Maintain portfolio quality by keeping Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) within the target Portfolio at Risk (PAR) percentage.

  • Customer Follow-Up & Recovery Enforcement: Lead the collections, verification, and recovery teams to ensure the effective implementation of Zembo’s debt qualification, collection, and recovery policies. Drive efforts to contact defaulting customers, negotiate repayment plans, and minimize write-offs.

  • Credit Policy Compliance: Ensure all recovery activities align with Zembo’s Credit Policy and relevant directives. Regularly review and enforce adherence to the debt management framework, proposing process improvements and policy adjustments to maintain sustainable credit operations.


Credit Operations Management

  • Process Standardization & Excellence: Establish and uphold Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for credit workflows, ensuring compliance, efficiency, and quality control throughout Zembo’s credit cycle.

  • Digital Tools & Systems: Lead the development and enhancement of digital tools, including CRM and loan management systems, to improve credit processing and ensure accurate data management.

  • Change Management: Facilitate the adoption of new processes, systems, and tools across teams with support, training, and change management strategies.

  • Policy Localization: Adapt credit policies to meet local regulatory and operational needs, providing guidance to ensure compliance across various markets.


Portfolio Performance & Risk Monitoring

  • KPI Tracking & Reporting: Develop dashboards and reports to monitor credit portfolio performance, providing real-time insights into key metrics.

  • Performance Analysis: Analyze credit performance data regularly to identify the root causes of underperformance and areas for improvement.

  • Risk Mitigation & Compliance: Develop and implement risk monitoring, compliance routines, and quality assurance processes to safeguard Zembo’s assets and maintain portfolio integrity.


Credit Culture & Capacity Development

  • Fostering Credit Awareness: Promote a credit-focused culture within Zembo, emphasizing the importance of sound lending practices and credit principles.

  • Training & Development: Build the capacity of the credit team through onboarding, continuous training, and support.

  • Mentorship: Mentor credit team members, particularly credit managers, to develop leadership skills and enhance their operational impact.


Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Stakeholder Management: Cultivate positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, facilitating communication across functions to support seamless credit operations.

  • Customer Support & Escalations: Work closely with sales, customer support, and collections teams to resolve customer issues, ensure smooth transitions throughout the credit process, and align on operational procedures.

  • Service Level Agreement (SLA) Monitoring: Define and track SLAs for credit processes, ensuring timely resolution and accountability for service-related issues.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Requirements

  • Experience in Credit Risk & Debt Recovery: At least 5 years of experience in credit risk management, collections, or recovery operations, ideally in financial services, asset financing, or a related sector within East Africa.

  • Proven Portfolio Management: Demonstrated experience in managing high-volume loan portfolios, reducing NPLs, and implementing recovery strategies. Familiarity with debt recovery best practices and minimizing Portfolio at Risk (PAR) is essential.

  • Strategic & Analytical Mindset: Strong analytical skills to assess portfolio performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop actionable plans.

  • Excellent Communication & Negotiation Skills: Skilled in negotiating repayment terms and coordinating with cross-functional teams to execute recovery strategies. Comfortable leading difficult conversations with customers regarding repayment and debt management.

  • Regulatory & Policy Compliance Knowledge: Knowledge of financial and lending regulations in Uganda and the ability to ensure recovery practices align with Zembo’s Credit Policy and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience with CRM Systems & Data Visualization Tools: Familiarity with CRM systems and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) is preferred.

  • Additional Skills: Familiarity with SQL and statistics packages is advantageous.
