Job Description

Talent Foresight, on behalf of its client, a leader in the agrochemical industry in East Africa, is seeking a highly skilled, passionate, and results-driven Farm Manager to oversee and optimize the operations of a 1000-hectare farm. The ideal candidate will play a key role in developing strategies to expand production, improve profitability, and ensure compliance with industry standards. With a minimum of five years of experience in managing crops such as maize, soybeans, cassava, groundnuts, and horticulture, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the farm's daily operations, ensuring production goals are met efficiently and effectively. This includes implementing crop rotation strategies, managing soil health, and applying pest control measures to maximize yield while minimizing losses. Strong leadership, resource management, and a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices are essential for success in this role.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the farm's operations and increase profitability for crops including maize, soybeans, sorghum, cassava, groundnuts, and horticulture.

  • Plan and execute an effective crop rotation system to optimize yields and improve soil health.

  • Manage budgets, allocate resources, and coordinate machinery, chemical use, irrigation, and labor across the farm.

  • Collaborate with the agronomy team to implement pest, disease, and weed control programs, ensuring the timely provision of agricultural inputs.

  • Oversee and manage labor activities to ensure productivity and operational efficiency on the farm.

  • Maintain inventory control and ensure regular restocking of essential supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other materials.

  • Conduct post-season yield analysis to assess performance and provide actionable insights for future improvements.

  • Develop and implement comprehensive farm management plans, including production schedules, resource allocation, and quality control measures.

  • Lead and motivate farm staff, fostering a collaborative work environment and ensuring high performance.

  • Monitor and analyze production data to identify areas for improvement and optimize yields.

  • Ensure full compliance with industry standards and certifications, including GlobalGAP, GRASP, and SMETA.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • A degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in farm management, focusing on crop production and operational efficiency.

  • In-depth knowledge of crop rotation, pest control, soil health management, and modern agricultural practices.

  • Proven experience managing budgets, resources, and labor in a large-scale farming environment.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to lead diverse teams and manage multiple tasks effectively.

  • Proficiency in analyzing production data and implementing strategies to improve farm efficiency.

  • Familiarity with industry regulations and certifications (e.g., GlobalGAP, GRASP, SMETA).
