Job Description
As the Engineering Manager for Ubuntu Security, you will lead a team of talented engineers focused on identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities in Ubuntu and its associated technologies. You’ll coordinate efforts across various projects and collaborate with upstream communities to ensure robust, enterprise-ready security measures.
This leadership role entails people management, technical oversight, and strategic planning. You will coach and mentor engineers, oversee project progress, ensure high-quality security practices, and actively contribute to Canonical’s mission of delivering safe and secure open-source solutions.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a globally distributed team of engineers.
Provide technical direction on security vulnerability remediation.
Oversee and develop new security engineering initiatives.
Collaborate with upstream open-source projects on security lifecycle management.
Implement structured engineering processes and ensure project progress.
Serve as a technical representative for the security team to stakeholders and partners.
Drive team performance through regular assessments and career development feedback.
Foster secure software development practices across Canonical.
Participate in biannual in-person company sprints.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent experience.
Proven leadership and people development experience.
Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken).
Track record in software development and secure engineering practices.
Proficiency in at least one major programming language (e.g., Go, Python, Java, C).
Knowledge and passion for software and application security.
Experience working in agile environments.
Ability to travel up to twice a year for company events.
Preferred:
Deep technical knowledge of Linux distributions (preferably Ubuntu or Debian).
Experience contributing to open-source projects.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Passion for open-source and community engagement.
