About the Organisation

The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Library Management: Assist the University Librarian in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library, including circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loans, and reference services.

  • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, and initiatives to enhance library services, resources, and facilities in alignment with the university's goals and priorities.

  • Staff Supervision: Provide leadership and supervision to library staff, including librarians, paraprofessionals, and support personnel. Delegate tasks, set performance expectations, and provide training and professional development opportunities.

  • Collection Development: Collaborate with subject librarians and faculty to assess information needs, develop collection strategies, and acquire resources (e.g., books, journals, databases, multimedia) that support teaching, learning, and research.

  • Information Literacy: Promote information literacy initiatives and programs to help students, faculty, and researchers develop critical thinking skills, information literacy competencies, and effective research practices.

  • Technology Integration: Evaluate, implement, and support library technologies, systems, and platforms to enhance access to digital resources, streamline workflows, and improve user experience.

  • Research Support: Provide research support services, including bibliographic instruction, citation management, literature reviews, and scholarly communication support (e.g., open access publishing, copyright assistance).

  • User Services: Ensure high-quality user services by maintaining a welcoming and accessible library environment, responding to user inquiries and feedback, and addressing user needs effectively and efficiently.

  • Collaboration and Outreach: Foster collaborations and partnerships with academic departments, research centers, student organizations, and external stakeholders to promote library resources, services, and initiatives.

  • Budget and Resource Management: Assist in budget planning, financial management, and resource allocation for library acquisitions, subscriptions, facilities maintenance, and staff development activities.

  • Assessment and Evaluation: Monitor and assess library services, programs, and collections using quantitative and qualitative methods. Use assessment data to inform decision-making, improve services, and demonstrate library impact.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with developments in library science, information technology, scholarly communication, and higher education trends. Engage in professional development activities, attend conferences, and participate in relevant professional organizations.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A master's degree in library and information science (MLIS) or a related field from an accredited institution is typically required. A doctoral degree may be preferred for some positions.

  • Experience: Several years of progressive experience in academic librarianship, including supervisory or management roles. Experience in a research university setting is preferred.

  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities to inspire, motivate, and empower staff, foster a culture of collaboration and innovation, and lead change initiatives.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders, present complex information clearly and persuasively, and represent the library in public forums.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, students, and external partners to achieve common goals and advance the mission of the library and the university.

  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical skills to assess complex issues, identify solutions, and make data-driven decisions. Ability to anticipate challenges, mitigate risks, and adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in library technologies, information systems, and digital resources. Familiarity with library management systems, digital repositories, discovery tools, and emerging technologies.

  • Customer Focus: Commitment to providing excellent customer service and meeting the information needs of library users. Ability to empathize with diverse user groups and create inclusive and accessible library environments.

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically, envision the future direction of the library, and develop innovative strategies and initiatives to support teaching, learning, and research in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices. Ability to promote diversity and cultural competence in library collections, services, and programming.
