Job Description
The Customs and Excise Manager is responsible for overseeing and ensuring that a company complies with customs and excise regulations, facilitating smooth import and export processes, and minimizing financial risk related to tariffs, duties, and taxes.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Develop and outline a Customs & Excise Strategy for the business.
Responding to queries from the tax authority.
Keeping abreast of changes in legislation and informing the business on their potential impact.
The management and review of all Customs & Excise declarations to ensure the business is legally compliant with all Customs & Excise regulations.
Seeking advance rulings from the tax authority on any tax matters that may be vague or ambiguous.
Carry out process reviews and tax reconciliations related to Customs & Excise.
Building effective and collaborative relationships and networks, both internal and external.
Engaging the tax authority on tax procedure challenges faced by the business.
Support with the development, design, and implementation of internal tax controls.
Provide guidance and support to the tax analyst and tax accountant.
Participate in weekly and monthly supplier review meetings.
Providing technical support and advice to stakeholders within the business on valuation, classification and all customs-related topics.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
A bachelor’s degree in business administration, Finance, International Trade or a related field.
5 - 7 years of experience in indirect tax, customs, import/export with a focus on regulatory compliance and excise procedures.
Knowledge of customs tariff classifications, excise duties, valuation, trade agreements, and relevant legal procedures.
Understanding import/export regulations, and overseeing duty compliance.
Experience with a Big Four consulting firm and/or in the FMCG sector is highly desirable.
Strong analytical skills for assessing risks, duty implications, and cost-saving opportunities.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills to coordinate with customs authorities, trade officials, and internal teams.
Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in documentation and compliance activities.
Problem-solving skills to manage customs delays, resolve compliance issues, and handle unexpected regulatory challenges.
