Job Description
Conduct research to understand specialized terminology and concepts related to the subject matter being translated. This may involve consulting dictionaries, reference materials, and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and consistency in terminology usage.
Duties and Responsibilities
Translate Written Content: The primary responsibility of a Chinese translator is to accurately translate written content from one language (usually English or another language) into Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), or vice versa. This may include documents, articles, reports, websites, marketing materials, legal contracts, technical manuals, and more.
Maintain Linguistic Accuracy: Ensure that translations maintain linguistic accuracy, including proper grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and style. Translators must also consider cultural nuances and context to produce culturally appropriate translations.
Research Terminology: Conduct research to understand specialized terminology and concepts related to the subject matter being translated. This may involve consulting dictionaries, reference materials, and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and consistency in terminology usage.
Proofreading and Editing: Review translated content to check for errors, inconsistencies, or inaccuracies. Proofreading and editing are essential to ensure the quality and integrity of the translated text before it is delivered to the client or published.
Adapt Content for Target Audience: Adapt translated content to suit the preferences, expectations, and cultural norms of the target audience. This may involve adjusting language, tone, and style to resonate with the intended readership.
Meet Deadlines: Work efficiently to meet project deadlines and turnaround times. Translators often work on multiple projects simultaneously and must manage their time effectively to deliver translations on schedule.
Communicate with Clients: Communicate with clients to understand project requirements, clarify ambiguities, and provide progress updates. Effective communication helps ensure that client expectations are met and that any issues or concerns are addressed promptly.
Collaborate with Stakeholders: Collaborate with other members of the translation team, such as editors, proofreaders, and project managers, to ensure smooth workflow and consistency in translations. Translators may also liaise with clients, subject matter experts, and external vendors as needed.
Maintain Confidentiality: Respect client confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Translators may be privy to confidential or proprietary information and must adhere to strict confidentiality policies and ethical standards.

Specialization: Many translators choose to specialize in specific fields such as legal, medical, technical, literary, or business translation. Specialization requires additional knowledge and terminology related to the chosen field.
Education and Training: While not always mandatory, a bachelor's degree in translation, linguistics, languages, or a related field can provide valuable knowledge and skills for a career in translation. Some positions may require advanced degrees or professional certifications.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in translation software and other computer tools is essential for modern translators. Familiarity with tools such as CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools, translation memory software, and terminology databases can improve efficiency and accuracy.
Ethical Standards: Translators are often entrusted with sensitive or confidential information. Upholding ethical standards, such as confidentiality, accuracy, and impartiality, is essential for maintaining trust with clients and protecting the integrity of the translation profession.
He/ She should be able to read through or listens to material in one language ie English, ascertains understanding of the meaning and context of that material, and converts it into a second language i.e. Chinese, making sure to preserve the original meaning of the communication;
Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues in order to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately;
Translates a variety of documents including literary, legal, research, technical and commercial materials;
Having lived in any Chinese state province is an added advantage;
The minimum level of experience required is 0-1 year of experience in working as a Chinese translator and age limit of 21-35 years
