Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Kyambogo University (KYU) was established with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching and Instruction: Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in textile and leather technology, as well as related areas such as materials science, polymer engineering, and chemical processing. Use innovative teaching methods, technologies, and instructional materials to engage students and facilitate learning.

  • Research and Scholarship: Conduct original research and scholarly activities in textile and leather technology, leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences, and contributions to the academic literature. Mentor graduate students and junior faculty members in research projects and scholarly endeavors.

  • Advising and Mentorship: Provide academic and career advising to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees and careers in textile and leather technology. Serve as a mentor to students, guiding them in their academic and professional development and facilitating research opportunities and internships.

  • Service and Leadership: Contribute to departmental, university, and professional service activities, including serving on committees, participating in faculty meetings, and engaging in academic governance. Provide leadership and expertise in the development of departmental policies, programs, and initiatives.

  • Industry Collaboration: Foster partnerships and collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders in the textile and leather industry. Engage in technology transfer activities, consulting projects, and collaborative research initiatives that address industry needs and contribute to economic development.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in textile and leather technology through ongoing professional development activities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. Pursue opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, industry engagement, and professional recognition within the field.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in textile engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field with a specialization in textile and leather technology is typically required. Some institutions may accept candidates with a master's degree in a relevant field, coupled with extensive industry experience and a strong record of research and scholarship.

  • Experience: Substantial experience in teaching, research, and industry practice related to textile and leather technology. Candidates should have a minimum of several years of experience in academia, industry, or both, demonstrating expertise in areas such as textile manufacturing processes, textile chemistry, fiber science, leather processing, quality control, and product development.

  • Teaching Experience: Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in textile and leather technology, as well as related areas such as textile engineering, textile chemistry, polymer science, and materials processing. Candidates should have a proven track record of innovative teaching methods, curriculum development, and student mentorship.

  • Research and Scholarship: A strong record of scholarly research and publication in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and other scholarly outlets related to textile and leather technology. Candidates should have a robust research agenda that contributes to the advancement of knowledge and addresses key challenges in the field.

  • Grants and Funding: Experience securing external research funding from government agencies, industry partners, and other sources to support research projects in textile and leather technology. Candidates should demonstrate success in grant writing and project management, as well as the ability to lead interdisciplinary research teams.

  • Professional Engagement: Active involvement in professional societies, conferences, and industry organizations related to textile and leather technology. Candidates should have a strong network of professional contacts and collaborations within the textile and leather industry, academia, and research institutions.

  • Leadership and Service: Demonstrated leadership abilities and a willingness to contribute to departmental, university, and professional service activities. Candidates should have experience serving on committees, advising students, mentoring junior faculty, and participating in academic governance.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences, including students, colleagues, industry partners, and stakeholders. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams and foster partnerships with industry.
