The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Deliver lectures, seminars, and workshops on topics related to intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to undergraduate and possibly graduate students. This may include courses on assessment, intervention strategies, behavior management, and lifespan issues.

  • Curriculum Development: Assist in developing and updating course materials, syllabi, and teaching resources in alignment with current research and best practices in the field of IDD.

  • Student Supervision: Provide guidance and supervision to students during practicum experiences, internships, and research projects related to IDD. Offer feedback and support to facilitate student learning and professional development.

  • Advising: Advise students on academic matters, career pathways, and research opportunities in the field of IDD. Assist students in setting academic goals and developing individualized plans of study.

  • Assessment and Evaluation: Develop and administer assessments to evaluate student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and program improvements.

  • Research and Scholarship: Engage in scholarly activities, including conducting research, publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at conferences. Collaborate with colleagues and students on research projects related to IDD.

  • Service and Outreach: Participate in departmental and university committees, as well as professional organizations, to contribute to academic governance and promote the interests of individuals with IDD. Engage in community outreach activities to raise awareness and support for individuals with IDD and their families.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in the field of IDD through ongoing professional development activities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A minimum of a master's degree in special education, psychology, social work, or a related field with a focus on intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some positions may require or prefer a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) for advanced research and teaching roles.

  • Teaching Experience: While previous teaching experience is not always required for entry-level positions, candidates with teaching experience, especially in higher education or special education settings, may have an advantage.

  • Clinical Experience: Practical experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, either in educational, clinical, or community settings, is highly desirable. Experience with assessment, intervention, and behavior management is beneficial.

  • Research Skills: Strong research skills and the ability to conduct scholarly research in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Candidates should demonstrate the potential for contributing to the knowledge base through research and publication.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for effectively conveying complex concepts and facilitating learning. The ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with individuals with IDD and their families is crucial.

  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, and community partners to promote interdisciplinary approaches to supporting individuals with IDD. Collaboration may involve working with professionals from diverse backgrounds, including educators, clinicians, and policymakers.

  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service activities. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse needs and experiences of individuals with IDD and their families.

  • Licensure/Certification: Depending on the specific requirements of the position and the jurisdiction, candidates may need to hold or be eligible for relevant professional licensure or certification in special education, psychology, or related fields.
