The AIDS Information Centre -Uganda is a catalytic not-for profit Non-Governmental Organization established on 14th February,1990 to provide Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services to the population of Uganda. AIC was the pioneer HIV Counselling and Testing Centre in Africa. Over the last 33 years, AIC has since evolved into a thought-leader in HIV programming, Health Systems Strengthening and Knowledge Management. AIC currently has 10 Centers of Excellence spread across the country, which include: Arua (West Nile region), Lira (Mid North region), Soroti (North-Eastern region), Mbale (Mid-Eastern region), Jinja (Eastern region), Kampala (Central region), Mbarara (Western region), Kabale, Kanungu and Rukungiri (South-Western region).
About Program:
AIC Intends to implement an integrated high quality school program, to provide early detection, Care and Treatment for both communicable and non-communicable diseases for the children, adolescents and youths wellbeing. This will entail a comprehensive and contextualized package of health services that will include: TB Screening, Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing, Nutritional Assessment, Counselling and Support, Sexually Transmitted Infections, screening, diagnosis and early management, deworming, dental checkups, eye sight assessment, screening for skin diseases, HPV Vaccination for girls (10 years and above) to prevent cervical cancer, breast cancer screening, BMI measurements and NCD screening (Hypertension and Diabetes), mental health assessment, novel vaccination for Ebola, COVID-19, Viral Hepatitis and Monkey Pox, VMMC, kidney function testing and liver function testing. The program also aims to tackle cross cutting issues including health education on climate change and mitigation needs, Infection Prevention Control (IPC) and proper waste management practices at the learning institutions and surrounding communities.

Job Description
Job Title: School Health Project Nurse (8 Fresher Job Vacancies)
Organisation: AIDS Information Centre (AIC)
Duty Station: Kampala, Jinja, Mbale, Soroti, Mbarara, Kabale, Arua and Lira, Uganda
Reports to: School Health Project Officer
The School Health Nurse shall be responsible for promoting the health and well-being of students, providing health education, and managing health-related issues within the school environment. He/she will ensure that the school health Program fosters a healthy school community and that students have access to necessary health services.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Conduct health screenings and assessments for students, including vision and hearing tests, immunization checks, and general health evaluations.
Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff as needed.
Manage chronic health conditions and assist with medication administration according to school policies.
Develop and deliver health education programs on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, mental health, and disease prevention to students, parents, and staff.
Work closely with teachers, parents, and healthcare providers to coordinate care for students with health issues.
Refer students to appropriate health services as necessary.
Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students. Monitor immunization records and ensure compliance with national health regulations.
Organize health promotion activities, including health fairs, workshops, and campaigns to encourage healthy lifestyles among students and staff.
Respond to health crises and emergencies in the school setting, including planning for and managing public health concerns.
Provide mental health support among students. Mental health support will include counselling services, stress management, conversion disorder, hysteria and awareness programs to reduce stigma around mental health issues.
Organize annual Mental Health/Substance Abuse Awareness Camps to improve school health and wellbeing.
Provide nutritional support in the school health program including feeding initiatives such as school feeding programs. These programs can improve students’ nutrition, education, weight management, BMI leading to better physical and cognitive development.
Promote good hygiene and sanitation practices among students, which can help prevent diseases like UTI’s, diarrhea and cholera. Proper hygiene also contributes to overall health and well-being.
Facilitate early detection of health issues among students by conducting regular health check-ups will identify conditions that might otherwise go unnoticed, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Minimum Academic Qualifications:
Diploma in Nursing / Comprehensive Nursing. Registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council is a MUST. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field will be an added advantage.
Additional Training:
Training in HIV Counselling
Training in HIV/AIDS care and support
Required Experience: Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a school or community health setting.
Key Skills:
Strong clinical skills and knowledge of child and adolescent health issues
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to educate and motivate students and staff on health-related topics
Proficiency in record-keeping and data management
Personal Attributes
Empathy and compassion for students and their families
Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
