Job Description

Agricado Farms is seeking experienced professionals in Agriculture/Horticulture to join our team!

The Scouting Team Leader is responsible for supervising a team of field scouts who monitor crops for pests, diseases, and other factors affecting crop health. The role involves ensuring that scouting activities are carried out accurately, on time, and that any issues identified are communicated effectively to farm management. The Scouting Team Leader plays a key role in maintaining healthy crop production by providing guidance, training, and oversight to the scouting team.

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead Scouting Team: Supervise, train, and manage a team of scouts responsible for inspecting crops regularly for pests, diseases, weeds, and nutrient deficiencies.

  • Field Monitoring: Ensure that scouting teams are assigned to specific fields and perform consistent and thorough crop inspections. Guide scouts on how to collect accurate data and identify potential problems.

  • Data Collection and Reporting: Ensure that all scouting data is recorded accurately, including pest counts, disease observations, and other findings. Review reports and relay critical information to farm management for decision-making.

  • Pest and Disease Identification: Lead the team in identifying common pests, diseases, and crop stress factors. Provide guidance on how to handle and report these issues promptly.

  • Follow-up on Issues: Collaborate with other departments to address any problems identified during scouting, including recommending or implementing pest control measures or other interventions.

  • Train New Team Members: Provide ongoing training and development to new scouts and seasonal workers, ensuring they understand the scouting process and how to accurately monitor crops.

  • Inventory and Equipment Management: Ensure that all scouting equipment (such as sampling tools, pest identification guides, and reporting materials) is in good condition and stocked as needed.

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all scouting activities are carried out safely, with attention to personal protective equipment (PPE) and farm safety standards. Ensure compliance with all agricultural regulations.

  • Report Management: Maintain accurate records of scouting activities, including field data, pest control measures taken, and any additional relevant information. Submit timely reports to farm management.

  • Collaborate with Farm Management: Work with farm managers and agronomists to provide insights into crop conditions and recommend actions for pest management, irrigation adjustments, and fertilization.

  • Quality Control: Review scouting reports for accuracy and consistency. Ensure that the team's findings are based on reliable and up-to-date information.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture/Horticulture

  • Experience with vegetable production (peppers & other Solanaceous vegetables)

  • Proficiency in English, Luganda, and/or Kiswahili

  • Willingness to live on a remote farm


  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in agricultural fieldwork, crop scouting, or a related role. Supervisory or team leadership experience is a plus.

  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of common agricultural pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies. Knowledge of crop care and field management practices.

  • Leadership: Ability to effectively lead, motivate, and guide a team of scouts, ensuring that they follow protocols and meet performance expectations.

  • Attention to Detail: Ability to identify subtle signs of crop stress, pests, or diseases that may not be immediately obvious.

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to walk long distances in the fields for extended periods.

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to report findings clearly and to coordinate with other farm teams.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze scouting data and make decisions or recommendations based on findings. Ability to quickly address issues as they arise.
